STUDENT: Americorps work (graduating seniors)

CITY YEAR, WASHINGTON DC (Americorps) - Graduating seniors who are not sure what they want to do after high school should consider applying for a paid community service position with City Year, Washington, DC., a group of 17-24 year olds committed to full-time service for ten months in the Washington, DC community. STUDENT: Student Essay Writing Contest

The District's Third Annual Student Essay Contest (click for flyer).

Students in grades 5-12 can enter to win a laptop and/or IPod, if they write an essay on the topic, "How Can Parents Partner with My School?" Details are available on the flyer or by contacting the Parent and Community Resource Center at 215-400-7272 or dhurst@philasd.org

Winners will be announced at the 4th Annual Parent Appreciation Day Event on Saturday, October 3rd at 440 North Broad Street at noon. Information about Parent Appreciation Day will be available soon.

May 18-22 Locker Painting

Mr. Bartal's Art 2 students are completing a locker painting project as their final exam. Each Art 2 class is responsible for painting a small mural on a set of lockers. he murals include several famous works of art, the American Flag, Obama's Hope poster, a scene from Hamlet, the planets, and the Eiffel Tower.

May 19 Career Day

On Tuesday, May 19, students met with various professionals who shared their careers. The small group sessions allowed students the opportunity to hear from people in fields such as education, social work, law, automotive industry, culinary arts, law enforcement, entertainment, EMT/fire, environmental, acting, fashion, photography, and others. Students asked questions regarding responsibilities, requirements, and other decision-making facts concerning careers of interest to them. Thanks to Mr. S King for organizing a great array of professionals, practitioners and presenters.

May 15 Prom 2009

Prom 2009 was held Friday, May 15, at the Temple Diamond Club, Temple University. Approximately 155 students and 25 staff members attended. The theme was "To Paris with Love." Students received momentos for the night including a silver frame to display their picture of this special night. Everyone looked fabulous and students had a great time dancing the night away.

May 14 Poetry Slam

The May 14 Poetry Slam was a stunning success. In recent weeks students attended a poetry workshop organized by Mr. S. King. Students were joined by professionals and several percussion performers and performed original works at the Poetry Slam.

Student poets are: James Bailey, Shayna King, Shkeem Brown, Jerrell Smith, Melody Woods, Katrina Scott, Saheem Blackwell, Brajeen Turner, Dave Toliver, Sabrina Dutton, Geneva Williams, Brittany Turner, Asia Holland, Jasmine Bey-Austin, Shariff Bosworth, Jonathan Williams, Antwyne Stevenson.

Ms. Lisa Mullen and Ms. Toi Brown also performed original works. It was great to see the students and staff display their talents.

May 1 Lawyer for a Day

Six HOPE Charter School students have been invited to participate in “Lawyer for a Day” program in Center City today. Students will spend the day shadowing a professional lawyer, visiting a court room, and learning the responsibilities of a lawyer. Brianne Williams-Medley, Eshanna Alexander, Katrina Scott, Kevin Floyd, Miosha Ximines and Porcha Hyman are the students that have been selected to attend this program.
