VESTED Academy - Villanova University - Student Opportunity

STEM - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, and COMPUTER SCIENCE:

Application deadline for Villanova University's VESTED Academy is November 8, 2010.

· The Villanova Engineering, Science, and Technology Enrichment and Development (VESTED) Academy is an intensive eight weekend long introduction to engineering experience for high school students entering grades 9th-12th.

· It is free.

· The VESTED program is modeled in such a way that students will gain maximum exposure to the exciting field of engineering

· The VESTED Academy is held on the campus of Villanova University in the College of Engineering which allows students immediate access to engineering laboratories and state of the art technological equipment. The program is held on selected Saturdays from January through April and will run from 9am to 2:00 pm. Lunch will be provided for all students and transportation will be available from designated pick-up locations within Philadelphia.

STUDENT: GWU Science and Engineering Apprenticeship program

GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Science and Engineering Apprenticeship program (summer) - This program places academically talented H.S. students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/ juniors) with interest in science and math in Dept. of Defense (DoD) laboratories for an 8-wk period over the summer. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific and engineering practices not available in the HS environment. It is a paid apprenticeship ($2,000) and the students are assigned a scientist or engineer as their mentor. To apply online or get more information about the program: http://www.usaeop.com. Students must submit their transcript (minimum GPA 3.0) and teacher recommendation to the program director for consideration and daily transportation is the student's responsibility. Program runs from June 22 - August 14, 2009.

Congratulations to freshman, George Hall, for completing the first course in the Villanova University VESTED program on Saturdays (January-April 2009).

Villanova Engineering, Science, Technology, Enrichment, and Development Program (VESTED) program seeks to increase each student's technical literacy and provide a valuable real world experience in engineering and technology.

TEACHER: The Philadelphia Math and Science Coalition Forum

Dear Math and Science Teachers:

The Philadelphia Math and Science Coalition invites you to participate in a forum for Philadelphia math and science teachers to be held at the United Way Building on May 7, 2009 from 4:30-6:00 PM. Dinner will be provided. The Coalition has been working on issues of importance to you and we need your feedback. Please see the attached summary for more information.

At this forum we are looking forward to reviewing with you ideas and proposals developed by the Coalition and soliciting your feedback. Over time, we are eager to work with you to continue to develop initiatives that will be helpful to you in your teaching and professional growth.

We very much need to hear from you about issues of math and science instruction, and we very much hope you will join us on May 7. We expect this forum to meet on a continuing basis. We will host these forums for math and science teachers several times a year.

The forum will be held in Lobby 2 and 3 conference rooms on the first floor of the United Way Building located at 7 Benjamin Franklin Parkway (between 17th and 18th Streets).
