STUDENT: National Space Club Scholars Program

NASA sponsors the National Space Club Scholars Program (NSCSP), a 6-week summer internship (June 29, 2009 – August 7, 2009) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. It is open to students who have demonstrated high academic success, and have an interest in space science or engineering as a career.

The National Space Club provides a stipend of $1,000 to help defray transportation and meal expenses during this six-week summer program. Potential NSC Scholars:
  • must have completed sophomore year in high school in good standing by the end of the current academic year;
  • must be 16 years of age by the starting date of the program;
  • must be a U.S. citizen;
  • must live and maintain permanent residence within commuting distance of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, or the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA.

The Leadership Center at Morehouse College presents the 2009 Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Training Program. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Science and Engineering Apprenticeship program (summer) - This program places academically talented H.S. students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/ juniors) with interest in science and math in Dept. of Defense (DoD) laboratories for an 8-wk period over the summer. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific and engineering practices not available in the HS environment. PBworks Summer Camp is a four week program being run by PBworks for teachers. In the Summer Camp participants will learn the ins and outs of using PBworks in their classrooms. There is a structured syllabus with weekly assignments for participants. Each week there is a webinar about that week's topic(s). Some of the course's topics include setting up a wiki, using interactive media, security settings, and using classroom accounts. You can read the full syllabus and course details here.

May 18-22 Locker Painting

Mr. Bartal's Art 2 students are completing a locker painting project as their final exam. Each Art 2 class is responsible for painting a small mural on a set of lockers. he murals include several famous works of art, the American Flag, Obama's Hope poster, a scene from Hamlet, the planets, and the Eiffel Tower.

STUDENT: The Forensic Mentors Institute

Summer Mentoring Research Program – This program is conducted under the The Forensic Mentors Institute (FMI) of the Foundation. High school students (chosen with an emphasis on those demographically underrepresented), high school science teachers and graduate students work in groups and conduct original research generally involving forensic science. The program, lasting nine weeks, starts in mid June and is completed by the third week of August. Projects and data are presented formally at the end of the program to an audience of teachers,fellow students, family, friends and various other invited scientists. Funding for these projects is from outside sources such as private donations, state funding and grants and ACS Project SEED grants as well as from the foundation’s endowment.

May 19 Career Day

On Tuesday, May 19, students met with various professionals who shared their careers. The small group sessions allowed students the opportunity to hear from people in fields such as education, social work, law, automotive industry, culinary arts, law enforcement, entertainment, EMT/fire, environmental, acting, fashion, photography, and others. Students asked questions regarding responsibilities, requirements, and other decision-making facts concerning careers of interest to them. Thanks to Mr. S King for organizing a great array of professionals, practitioners and presenters.

May 15 Prom 2009

Prom 2009 was held Friday, May 15, at the Temple Diamond Club, Temple University. Approximately 155 students and 25 staff members attended. The theme was "To Paris with Love." Students received momentos for the night including a silver frame to display their picture of this special night. Everyone looked fabulous and students had a great time dancing the night away.

May 14 Poetry Slam

The May 14 Poetry Slam was a stunning success. In recent weeks students attended a poetry workshop organized by Mr. S. King. Students were joined by professionals and several percussion performers and performed original works at the Poetry Slam.

Student poets are: James Bailey, Shayna King, Shkeem Brown, Jerrell Smith, Melody Woods, Katrina Scott, Saheem Blackwell, Brajeen Turner, Dave Toliver, Sabrina Dutton, Geneva Williams, Brittany Turner, Asia Holland, Jasmine Bey-Austin, Shariff Bosworth, Jonathan Williams, Antwyne Stevenson.

Ms. Lisa Mullen and Ms. Toi Brown also performed original works. It was great to see the students and staff display their talents.

TEACHER: Biology - Linking photosynthesis, respiration, and atmospheric CO2

A four day MSP summer workshop this summer called "Linking photosynthesis, respiration, and atmospheric CO2"

Teachers will receive Act 48 and be paid at the contractual rate.

You MUST be a full time School District of Philadelphia (SDP) Teacher.

You MUST register using PD Planner starting May 8th.

This one week workshop for high school biology and environmental science teachers will be an in-depth exploration of carbon cycling through living organisms and the environment. In addition to teaching advanced biology content on the carbon cycle and global climate change, this workshop will help teachers make connections across the curriculum using hands-on/minds-on activities including chromatography and direct measurements photosynthesis and respiration. Teachers will gain experience using Vernier sensor probes and will have access to classroom library sets they will be able to check out and use in their classrooms.

Summer 2009 Externship Fellowship focused on Sustainability

Educators interested in incorporating issues of sustainability into their teaching are invited to apply for one of three MSP Fellowships to engage in an Externship with a green organization (business/non-profit/government organization) during summer 2009.

Receipents of the fellowship will have their tuition paid for to take the Externship course offered by West Chester University’s 3E Institute and will also receive a $500 stipend. In exchange, Fellows will research ways to link their green Externship with initiatives at their school.

TEACHER: Beyond AP Statistics (BAPS) Workshop

The ASA/NCTM Joint Committee is pleased to sponsor a Beyond AP Statistics (BAPS) Workshop at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Washington, DC, August 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Organized by Roxy Peck, the BAPS workshop is offered for experienced AP Statistics teachers and consists of enrichment material just beyond the basic AP syllabus. The cost of the workshop is $50, which covers materials, lunch, and refreshments. Participants will also be given a pass to attend the exhibit hall at the Joint Statistical Meetings and a certificate of participation from the American Statistical Association certifying professional development hours. Optional graduate credit is also available. Course attendees do not need to register for the Joint Statistical Meetings in order to participate in this workshop. The course is divided into four sessions led by noted statisticians:

The Teacher Collaboration Program hosted by National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) is intended to provide links between teachers, scientists, and educators with interest in mathematical biology. Math or biology/science teachers interested in making connections between the fields are encouraged to participate.

NIMBioS will pair teachers with interest in mathematics and biology with active researchers in the math biology community. Collaboration activities can include:
  • Electronic emails
  • Phone sessions

  • Classroom visits if possible
  • Cooperation for after school activities if possible
